CHAPTER FIFTEEN

She looked beautiful and nervous. He held her hand as he led her into the side entrance of church. His family took up about four pews and he slid in, next to Tessa and Ray. Their monsters were spread throughout the pews, preferring to sit next to their cousins.

Father Dan spoke about Matthew 7:3, one of Mike’s favorite passages, warning people to mind their own business. Mel seemed interested and started to relax. His mom caught his eye and gave him a warm smile. Yeah; it was a big deal bringing Mel to church, but he didn’t want her to know that.

She wasn’t ready.

She wanted it; he knew that for sure. Last night she’d accepted him, and that there was more than just sex between them. The woman was dead set on being independent, figuring everything out on her own. Someone in her life had taught her that if she didn’t or couldn’t, she wasn’t worth anything. He’d like to punch that asshole. Mel was strong and smart, but dammit, she was so stubborn about asking for help. Mike knew he needed to push her on that, and help her over that emotional hurdle.

He reached for her hand and she allowed him to hold it. The woman frustrated the hell out of him at times, trying to define their relationship as casual when he knew damn well it wasn’t. But then—he couldn’t imagine her mother suggesting that she give away her children. That was just fucked up. He didn’t need definitions for their relationship; he knew what it was. But then, maybe she couldn’t handle more than casual right now. Fine. She liked the word exclusive. He would prefer her to recognize him as her Dominant, but that would freak the crap out of her. In time, though, she’d see that what they had was perfect for them.

Would she even consider him if she wasn’t pregnant? Probably not. He reasoned she’d find his age a turn-off. It’s one thing to find him attractive, but another to pursue a relationship. He sure as hell wouldn’t have been friend-zoned, but considering how hard she tried to pretend they were casual...well, the woman wouldn’t have thought about him seriously.

Hell, no. If she hadn’t gotten pregnant, she’d be moving to Lexington for a PR job. Or maybe to Washington to work with Colt. He smirked, thinking, God sure works in mysterious ways...

He rubbed his thumb over the back of Mel’s hand and remembered the notebook he found with her lists. The woman wrote lists when she was frazzled. So fucking logical. She only thought of the babies, not herself. So strong. She wanted grandparents, family to help, she wanted a job with flexible hours, she needed some help but she’d never ask. She’d never accept it from him, either. He looked around, at all the family that surrounded him, and knew she wouldn’t be able to say no to them. No one could.

After mass, he introduced Mel to Father Dan as his girlfriend and she didn’t argue.
